Antsahadinta is one of the twelve sacred hills that ring Antananarivo, lying southwest of the capital and reached by a winding road through rice terraces. The hilltop preserves royal tombs, a small nineteenth-century palace and remnants of dense indigenous forest protected by long-standing taboos. It offers a quieter alternative to the busier royal sites, with panoramic views across the highlands. The vegetation includes medicinal plants and old-growth trees, conveying the history of the Merina hill kingdoms that once dotted this landscape.
