The Livingstonia Mission stands high on the Rift Valley escarpment above the northern shore of Lake Malawi, founded by Scottish missionaries in the 1890s after earlier lakeside sites proved malarial. The settlement includes a stone church with a memorial window, a clock tower, a hospital, schools and mission houses, reached by a dramatic winding road of many hairpin bends. Established in the wake of David Livingstone's campaign against the slave trade, it became a centre of education in the north.
