This mosque in the old Hamar Weyne quarter of Mogadishu is among the oldest in the Horn of Africa, traditionally dated to the thirteenth century and named for the city's first sultan. Built of coral stone and marble, it preserves fine mihrab decoration and inscriptions attesting to Mogadishu's early importance as a centre of Islam and Indian Ocean trade. Despite the damage of prolonged conflict, it stands as a rare survival of the medieval city. It remains a monument of great historical and religious significance.
