This volcanic massif in the Darfur region rises to the highest point in Sudan and forms a cool, fertile island amid the surrounding arid plains. Its central crater holds twin lakes fed by rainfall, while terraced slopes support orchards and springs feeding waterfalls. The range has long sheltered communities farming its temperate highlands. Though remote and, in recent times, affected by conflict, Jebel Marra is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and its striking contrast with the deserts that ring it.
