This ruined city in the desert northeast of Khartoum was a major religious centre of the Kingdom of Kush during the Meroitic period. Its well-preserved monuments include a temple to the lion-god Apedemak, decorated with reliefs of kings and queens, and a curious Roman-influenced kiosk blending Egyptian, Hellenistic and local styles. The site, part of the Island of Meroe World Heritage listing, sits amid open savanna dotted with acacia. Its sculptures offer vivid insight into the distinctive art and religion of ancient Kush.
