National Museum of Eritrea

This museum in Asmara presents the archaeology, ethnography and history of Eritrea, drawing on finds from ancient sites such as Qohaito and Adulis along the Red Sea trade routes. Exhibits include pottery, tools, inscriptions, coins and traditional artefacts from the country's nine ethnic groups. Displays also address the long struggle for independence. Housed in a former colonial building, the museum serves as the country's central repository of cultural heritage and a starting point for understanding its layered past.
