Crowning Old Kampala hill, this vast mosque is among the largest in East Africa and dominates one of the capital's founding heights. Begun under one government and completed with foreign support, it was long known by the name of a former head of state before being renamed. A tall minaret offers climbers a commanding view over Kampala's hills and sprawl. The domed prayer hall, decorated with chandeliers and calligraphy, seats thousands. It stands near the spot where the colonial fort that gave Kampala its start once stood.
