The Saudi Mosque, the grand mosque of Nouakchott, is the principal Islamic monument of the Mauritanian capital, built with Saudi funding and marked by two tall minarets. Its broad prayer hall and courtyard accommodate large congregations in a deeply religious Islamic republic. Standing near the centre of the city, it anchors the surrounding administrative and commercial quarter. As the most prominent mosque in a planned capital that grew rapidly from a small settlement, it is a key landmark of Nouakchott's religious and civic life.
