Hebron/Al-Khalil Old Town

Pilgrims of three faiths converge on Hebron/Al-Khalil, where a compound raised in the 1st century CE encloses the tombs of Abraham/Ibrahim and his family — today the Al-Ibrahimi Mosque and Tomb of the Patriarchs. Around this sanctuary the Mamluks built the old town in local limestone between 1250 and 1517, its quarters ordered by trade and kinship at a crossroads of caravan routes; Ottoman centuries added upper storeys without erasing the Mamluk town plan. UNESCO inscribed the old town in 2017.
