Tafawa Balewa Square is a large ceremonial ground on Lagos Island where Nigeria's independence was formally proclaimed in 1960. Named after the country's first prime minister, the square is flanked by monumental sculptures of horses and eagles at its gateway. Built on the site of a former racecourse, it has hosted parades, rallies, and national celebrations. Today it serves as an event and exhibition space in the historic core of Lagos. The arena and its surrounding architecture remain closely tied to the story of Nigerian statehood.
