On the Cyrenaican coast, the ancient port of Apollonia served as the harbour of nearby Cyrene and later became a Byzantine city in its own right. Its ruins include the remains of several early churches, a theatre carved near the shore, colonnaded streets and a palace, with parts of the ancient harbour now submerged offshore. Set directly against the sea, the site combines archaeology with a striking coastal setting. Together with Cyrene above, Apollonia forms part of one of the most important Greco-Roman landscapes in North Africa.
