On the Cyrenaican coast lie the ruins of Ptolemais, one of the cities of the ancient Greek Pentapolis and later a Roman provincial capital. Its remains include colonnaded streets, cisterns, a theatre, grand villas with mosaic floors and the shells of Byzantine churches, spread across a wide site above the sea. Founded as the port of Cyrene, it grew into a prosperous city in its own right. Less famous than nearby Cyrene, Ptolemais offers an equally rich picture of Greco-Roman urban life along the coast of eastern Libya.
