Palestine: Land of Olives and Vines – Cultural Landscape of Southern Jerusalem, Battir

Stone terraces step down the hills of Battir, southwest of Jerusalem, where farmers have shaped the widian — cultivated valleys — for centuries. Springs feed an ancient network of irrigation channels, and village families still share the water by traditional rotation; irrigated plots grow vegetables while drier terraces carry olive trees and grapevines. This living agricultural landscape of southern Jerusalem was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014.
