These extensive ruins mark the site of a major Roman military camp that once housed a legion guarding the empire's African frontier. The most imposing survivor is the great four-fronted arch of the headquarters building, still standing amid the scattered foundations of barracks, temples and baths. A nearby museum gathers inscriptions and sculpture unearthed on the site, documenting the daily life of the garrison. Set in the high plains near Batna, Lambaesis gives a vivid sense of the scale of Roman power in the Algerian interior.
