The landscaped waterfront along the Ishim River divides Astana between its older right bank and the futuristic left-bank government district, and its promenades have become a favoured place to take in the capital's remarkable skyline. Paved walkways, fountains, bridges and gardens line the water, offering views of glittering towers, ministries and monuments reflected in the river. In summer boats ply the channel, while in the long winters the frozen surface becomes a setting for festivals.
