A large freshwater lake in the Khangai highlands, dammed into being by ancient lava flows from a nearby volcano, its pale waters give it the name White Lake. Ringed by grassy shores, forested hills and the black basalt of old eruptions, it teems with fish and migratory waterbirds. The dormant Khorgo volcano rises close by, its crater accessible on foot for wide views over the lake and valleys. Nomads graze their herds along the shoreline, and ger camps offer swimming, fishing and horse riding in central Mongolia.
