The country's best-known waterfall tumbles some twenty metres over the basalt lip of a lava-formed gorge in the upper Orkhon Valley. Born of ancient volcanic eruptions and fed by snowmelt, the falls are most powerful after summer rains, when the river plunges into a deep rocky pool below. Trails lead down into the canyon to view the water from beneath the columnar cliffs. Set amid the wildflower meadows and grazing herds of the Orkhon Valley, it is a favourite stop for riders, campers and travellers exploring central Mongolia's heartland.
