Chak Chak Shrine

The mountain shrine of Chak Chak in Yazd province is the most sacred pilgrimage site of the Zoroastrian faith in Iran, built into a cliff face reached by a long flight of steps up the barren slope. According to tradition, a spring here miraculously provided water to a fleeing princess, and drops still fall from the rock within the sanctuary, giving the place its onomatopoeic name. Ancient trees and a fire chamber occupy the grotto behind bronze doors. Visitors who climb up can view the spring, the desert vista, and Zoroastrian devotion.
