The fire temple of Yazd, sometimes called the Atash Behram, houses a sacred flame that adherents believe has burned continuously for many centuries, tended by Zoroastrian priests. Set in a garden behind a pool, the twentieth-century building bears the winged figure of the faith's symbol above its entrance and shelters the fire within a glass-fronted sanctuary. Yazd remains a centre of the Zoroastrian community in Iran. Visitors can view the ever-burning flame through the window of the inner chamber and learn of an ancient religion.
