The Al Muhdhar Mosque in the town of Tarim is famous for its towering minaret, a square mud-brick tower rising many metres above the town and regarded as one of the tallest earthen structures of its kind. Built in the early twentieth century and named after a revered local scholar, the mosque anchors a town long known as a centre of Islamic learning in the Hadhramaut. Its whitewashed minaret has become an emblem of the region. Visitors can view the slender tower against the desert light and the town's scholarly tradition.
