The Great Mosque of Kufa is one of the earliest and most revered mosques in Islam, founded in the seventh century when Kufa served as a garrison city and capital. It is associated with major events in early Islamic history and holds shrines and prayer spots venerated by Shia Muslims. The large courtyard, arcaded prayer halls, and several small sanctuaries within the walls mark places of particular significance. Visitors can walk the expansive enclosure and view the restored arcades and domes of a formative site of the faith.
