The Al-Shaheed Monument, or Martyr's Memorial, stands on the eastern side of Baghdad as a large modern structure commemorating soldiers killed in war. Designed by an Iraqi artist and completed in the 1980s, it takes the form of a split turquoise-tiled dome, its two halves separated to reveal a symbolic flame and inner space. Set on a raised platform surrounded by an artificial lake, it fuses traditional dome imagery with bold modern scale. Below lie a museum and galleries, reached by a causeway between the water and dome.
