An archaeological site in the Kvemo Kartli region of southern Georgia, world-famous for the discovery of some of the earliest human ancestors found outside Africa, dated to around 1.8 million years ago. The finds of hominin skulls transformed understanding of early human migration. The same hill also holds the ruins of a medieval town, with a fortress, a basilica and remains of a bathhouse and bazaar. The layering of deep prehistory and medieval history at one site makes Dmanisi a place of exceptional scientific and cultural importance.
