The ruins of an ancient fortified town on the Black Sea coast of the Adjara region of Georgia, founded in late antiquity as a Byzantine stronghold. Perched on a rocky headland above the sea near the modern village of Tsikhisdziri, it controlled a key point on the coast and was contested in wars between Byzantium and Persia. Excavations have revealed walls, a basilica and baths, and the remains still crown the cliffs above the shore. The dramatic coastal setting and layered history draw visitors touring the region.
