A monastery of the 10th and 11th centuries in the Shirak region of northwestern Armenia, set beside a river in a green valley near the city of Gyumri. Its main church, built of reddish-brown tufa stone, has an elegant tall drum and dome typical of the classic Armenian style, and is accompanied by smaller churches and ruins within the grounds. Founded by a noble family, it was an important centre in the medieval kingdom. The tranquil riverside setting and warm-toned stone make it a favourite excursion from the nearby city.
