A medieval monastery in the Imereti region of western Georgia, celebrated for the well-preserved frescoes covering the interior of its small church of St George. Painted in the 14th century, the murals depict biblical scenes and saints in a distinctive style that marks an important phase of Georgian art. A tall stone tower stands beside the church within the walled compound, once used by ascetic monks. Set among wooded hills near the main east-west route, the monastery is a rewarding stop for those interested in medieval painting.
