The dramatic ruins of a medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop above the Mtkvari River gorge in southern Georgia, not far from the cave city of Vardzia. Once an important stronghold controlling a trade route, it spread across several crags linked by walls and towers. Earthquakes and warfare reduced it to ruin, but the jagged remains still cling spectacularly to the cliffs. The site is reached by rough tracks and rewards visitors with striking views over the deep canyon and the surrounding arid highlands.
