A medieval monastery in central Georgia known above all for the exceptional frescoes in its main church of St Nicholas, painted around the turn of the 13th century. Among them is a celebrated figure of an angel rendered in vivid blue, considered a masterpiece of Georgian mural art. The brick church stands on a wooded hillside within a small complex of chapels. The monastery flourished during the golden age of the Georgian kingdom, and its wall paintings remain an important record of the art of that era.
