The core of the historic old town of Tbilisi, a warren of narrow cobbled lanes climbing the slopes below Narikala fortress. Its houses are known for carved wooden balconies that overhang the streets, many restored and some still weathered with age. The quarter mixes Orthodox churches, a mosque, a synagogue and Armenian churches, reflecting the city's long tradition of religious coexistence. Cafes, wine bars and craft shops now fill many of the old courtyards, drawing visitors who wander the atmospheric streets on foot.
