Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja is the last stretch of primary tropical rainforest left in Sri Lanka that still functions as a living ecosystem, and its statistics are astonishing: over 60 percent of its trees grow nowhere else, many of them rare, and more than half the island's endemic mammals and butterflies shelter beneath the canopy. Endemic birds are the reserve's particular glory, moving through the forest in noisy mixed flocks. UNESCO inscribed Sinharaja in 1988.
