The great pagoda of the purpose-built national capital, this gilded stupa was completed in the 2000s and closely resembles the famous golden pagoda of the former capital, though it stands slightly shorter out of deference. Unusually, its interior is hollow and can be entered, revealing a vast domed hall decorated with jade carvings and murals depicting Buddhist themes. The surrounding grounds are home to a small herd of white elephants regarded as auspicious, making it the spiritual centrepiece of the city.
