Built in the 1950s to mark a major international Buddhist gathering, this pagoda in the former capital takes its name from an aspiration for world peace. Unusual among the country's stupas, its hollow interior can be entered, revealing an octagonal shrine hall lined with Buddha images and enshrined relics. Nearby stands a vast artificial cave hall constructed for the great council of monks held at the time, capable of holding thousands, and the site remains an important centre for meditation and study.
