The Shrine of the Cloak in Kandahar houses a relic said to be a cloak of the Prophet Muhammad, making it one of the most venerated Islamic sanctuaries in Afghanistan. Kept within a domed building beside the tomb of the eighteenth-century ruler who established the modern state, the relic is displayed only rarely, and its showing has marked moments of great political significance in the country's history. The complex forms a spiritual and symbolic centre for the region. Its guarded sanctity gives it exceptional standing.
