Trashigang Dzong crowns a spur high above the confluence of rivers in far eastern Bhutan, built in the seventeenth century to defend the region and long the administrative seat of the country's most populous eastern district. Its position on a near-vertical bluff gave it a formidable natural defence, with sheer drops on several sides. The dzong combines district offices with a monastic body and commands sweeping views over the surrounding gorges. Reached along winding mountain roads, it lies well off the standard tourist circuit.
