Simraungadh is the site of a medieval capital in the Nepal Terai, once the seat of the Karnat dynasty that ruled a kingdom straddling the present border in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Scattered brick mounds, tanks, sculptures and temple remains mark the extent of the former city amid farmland near the frontier. Local shrines incorporate ancient carved stones, and the area retains strong regional historical significance. Less visited than valley monuments, it rewards travellers interested in lowland history.
