Tilaurakot is an archaeological site in the Nepal Terai widely identified with ancient Kapilavastu, the Shakya capital where the future Buddha spent his early life. Excavations have revealed the fortified layout of the town, gateways, brick foundations of palaces and a moat, spread across a peaceful rural setting near Lumbini. Small museums nearby display recovered pottery, coins and ornaments. Far quieter than the pilgrimage centre at Lumbini, it appeals to those interested in the historical context of the Buddha's homeland.
