Pharping is a hillside settlement south of the valley revered by Tibetan Buddhists as a place where the master Padmasambhava meditated and attained realisation. Its slopes are dotted with monasteries, meditation caves and self-arisen images associated with his practice, including the Asura Cave. Hindu pilgrims also visit the nearby Sekh Narayan shrine set beside spring-fed pools. The mingling of traditions, forested paths between gompas and views over terraced fields make Pharping a layered pilgrimage landscape.
