Spanning the vast Jamuna River, this multipurpose bridge was one of the longest in South Asia when it opened in the late 1990s, linking the country's east and west across a broad braided waterway. Carrying road, rail and utility lines, it dramatically improved connectivity between the capital region and the northern districts. Its long, low profile stretching across the shifting sandbanks of the river is a notable feat of engineering in a delta prone to flooding.
