The best-preserved Confucian tutorial academy in Taiwan, built in 1814 in the old walled town of Fongshan to prepare local scholars for the imperial civil service examinations. Its modest halls, study rooms, and central shrine to the god of literature follow a restrained southern-Fujian plan around quiet courtyards. Timber brackets, carved screens, and a classroom layout survive largely intact, offering a rare glimpse of Qing-era education. Now a national monument, it recalls the scholarly ambitions of early settlers.
