Founded on the collection of a railway magnate, this museum in a quiet residential district of southwestern Tokyo specializes in classical East Asian art, and its greatest treasure is a set of national-treasure illustrated handscrolls of a famous eleventh-century court novel, shown only briefly each year. The holdings also include tea ceremony objects, calligraphy, ceramics, and Buddhist art. A large hillside garden dotted with stone Buddhist statues and a teahouse surrounds the galleries, extending the experience outdoors.
