The main provincial museum of Guangdong, housed since 2010 in a bold lacquered-box building along Guangzhou's Zhujiang New Town axis near the opera house. Its galleries survey the history, art and natural environment of southern China, with ceramics, calligraphy, carved ivory, dinosaur fossils and minerals. The hollowed interior, inspired by a carved Chinese curio box, wraps exhibition halls around a dramatic central void. Visitors explore themed floors on Cantonese culture and maritime trade, then take in city views across the new district.
