This Renaissance hunting palace crowns a hill in the Erzgebirge and was built by a Saxon elector as a display of princely power. Its four wings enclose a courtyard, and a chapel holds an altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Younger. Today the halls display collections of motorcycles and carriages alongside the hunting rooms. A distinctive detail is the deep castle well, sunk over a hundred metres through solid rock, whose bucket-hoist is demonstrated to visitors in the vaulted well house.
