This Romanesque cathedral is a masterpiece of medieval sculpture, its façade carved with vivid biblical scenes by the artist Wiligelmo. Beside it rises the leaning tower known as the Ghirlandina, the symbol of the city. The interior preserves a raised choir and an ornate rood screen. A distinctive detail is the set of reliefs of Genesis running across the west front, among the earliest large-scale narrative sculpture of the medieval revival, showing the creation and fall of humanity in bold relief.
