The excavated ruins of a Viking-age farmstead in the Þjórsárdalur valley, buried by ash from a volcanic eruption of Hekla in the early twelfth century and later uncovered by archaeologists. The stone and turf foundations of a longhouse, byre and outbuildings reveal the layout of an early Norse farm. A full reconstruction, the Commonwealth Farm, stands nearby to show how it once looked. Sheltered now under a protective roof, the site offers rare direct evidence of daily life in the settlement era of the island.
