A circular hilltop earthwork ringed by trees, this was the inauguration place of the O'Neill kings of Tír Eoghain from the medieval period. New chiefs were installed here in a ceremony where a stone throne was used and a shoe cast over the candidate to symbolise the path ahead. The English commander Mountjoy destroyed the throne in 1602 to break the ritual power of the dynasty. From the ramparts the view stretches across the drumlins of mid Ulster, with panels explaining the ancient rites once performed here.
