Overlooking the Volga embankment in Nizhny Novgorod, this opulent nineteenth-century mansion belonged to the wealthy Rukavishnikov merchant family and now houses part of the regional history museum. Its richly ornamented facade, laden with sculpted figures, caryatids and stucco, exemplifies the eclectic taste of the era's Volga merchants. Inside, restored ceremonial rooms preserve painted ceilings, mirrored halls and grand staircases. Museum displays trace the history of the city and surrounding province.
