This early nineteenth-century observatory on Tartu's Toome hill is where the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve carried out pioneering measurements of stellar distances. It anchors the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of survey points across Europe recognised for its scientific importance. The restored building displays historic telescopes and instruments and explains the town's role in the history of astronomy. Set among the parkland and ruins of the old cathedral hill, it forms part of a cluster of university heritage sites.
