Ostrów Lednicki is an island in Lake Lednica between Poznań and Gniezno, holding the ruins of one of the earliest strongholds of the Polish state. Archaeological remains include a ducal palace and a stone chapel with baptismal fonts, thought by some to be where the first Christian rulers were baptised in the 10th century. The fortified settlement was a key seat of the early Piast dynasty before it was destroyed. Reached by ferry, the island and its associated open-air museum on the shore illuminate the origins of the Polish nation.
