This Carthusian monastery on the outskirts of Burgos shelters some of the finest late-Gothic sculpture in Spain within its single-nave church. The star-shaped alabaster tomb of King John II and his queen, carved by the master Gil de Siloé, sits before a towering gilded altarpiece said to be worked with some of the first gold brought back from the Americas. A separate tomb honours the couple's son. Still home to a contemplative community, part of the church is open to visitors seeking a hidden treasury of royal art.
