This Gothic church stands at the heart of the walled old town of Cáceres, whose intact ensemble of medieval and Renaissance palaces earned World Heritage status. Built mainly in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the church has a robust bell tower that can be climbed for a rooftop view over the honey-coloured stone towers, storks' nests and coats of arms of the surrounding mansions. Inside, a large carved cedar altarpiece dominates the nave. The church anchors a labyrinth of squares little changed since the conquistadors.
